UWI hosts Symposium today on the Impact of COVID-19 on Health Systems

This af­ter­noon, the Fac­ul­ty of Med­ical Sci­ences (FMS) at The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (The UWI), St Au­gus­tine Cam­pus and its Caribbean Cen­tre for Health Sys­tems Re­search and De­vel­op­ment (CCH­SRD), will host a Vir­tu­al Sym­po­sium on, “The Im­pact of COVID-19 on Health Sys­tems”.

The vir­tu­al sym­po­sium is sched­uled for 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., to­day, Sun­day, 3 May 2020, and can be viewed at www.uwitv.org.

The UWI says to­day’s sym­po­sium will pro­vide an in­sight­ful fo­rum and per­spec­tives of med­ical pro­fes­sion­als, econ­o­mists and aca­d­e­mics as they dis­cuss is­sues cur­rent­ly af­fect­ing Trinidad and To­ba­go and the re­gion be­fore, dur­ing and af­ter COVID-19, such as:

1. Lessons from the Span­ish Flu of 1918

2. SARS-CoV-2 Sur­vival in the En­vi­ron­ment

3. Post-COVID Chal­lenges for the Health Care Sys­tem

4. Patho­gen­e­sis: Im­pli­ca­tions for the Health Care Sys­tem

5. The Eco­nom­ic Im­pact of the COVID Lock­down on the Caribbean

The Vir­tu­al Sym­po­sium will be mod­er­at­ed by Ms. Mar­sha Ivey, Lec­tur­er in Pub­lic Health and Pri­ma­ry Care, The UWI St. Au­gus­tine, and will in­clude the fol­low­ing speak­ers:

Es­tab­lished in 2008, the CCH­SRD is a Cam­pus Re­search Cen­tre at The UWI St. Au­gus­tine which pro­vides a pro­gram of work in Health Pol­i­cy and Sys­tems Re­search (HP­SR) as a means to strength­en health sys­tems in the Caribbean re­gion.

Its aim is to gen­er­ate and fa­cil­i­tate the use of re­search ev­i­dence, em­pow­er­ing Caribbean coun­tries to strength­en health sys­tems and pol­i­cy mak­ing process­es, thus en­abling greater eq­ui­ty in health.
